A brewer can't brew without them. I remedied that problem yesterday when I stopped in at Keystone Homebrew Supply in Mongomeryville. They didn't have the 33 lb package of malt extract due to the mad rush to brew over Presidents Day Weekend so I'll have to make due with a couple packages of LME and DME. Time to put in an order for that 33 lb LME from from Northern Brewer. Oh yeah, got some 1056 Wyeast American Ale Yeast too.
No grand plan here. Just gonna brew with what I gots. I already have specialty grains and hop pellets. Now for the recipe. Did I ever tell you that I like the last minute seat of my pants grab bag approach? :-)

wow, you're buying in bulk with the extract? You should definitely take the plunge into all grain. For the cost of one of those 33lb extract things, you could have your whole AG system built.

Yeah...go all grain. You'll probably never hear us stop urging you on. It definitely pays for itself in a very short period of time. I just ordered my first 50lb sack of organic pale malt for less than $50 bucks.
I think I've only brewed by the seat of my pants once, a Barleywine. My brother used that approach. I'll bet you can come up with great beers that way too. It's just another brewer's way.

My default way of brewing is seat of the pants. To a point. I mean I stick to a specific proces and I use good ingredients.
Hey, I don't have a homebrew store within 20 minutes so I keep a grab bag of stuff on hand. When I get time to brew I brew with what I have. This usually lends itself to buying in bulk and improvising. So I save money and have fun at the same time :-)
