How important is carbon dioxide to brewing?

I think its the most important thing about brewing, but, I'm curious about what you think. Why is carbon dioxide so important?

I think it has a lot to do with bringing out the flavor as well as masking the alcohol.

Hmm, interesting question - I think CO2 is very important, but I wouldn't say it's the *most* important...for that, I think I'd say yeast since they create the CO2 and alcohol. However, you can't really have beer without the malt and hops, too, right? Now we're getting into beer philosophy!
