Bleeder valve...

I use this bleeder valve with a pressure guage to check the pressureof my beer when its carbonating in the keg. Connect it to the gas in side of the cornie. I let off excess pressure every so often until it stabilizes close to serving PSI. Good for over carbonated beer.

If you prime your kegs to carbonate them you can use this to help monitor that fermentation. No more increase in pressure, means it must be close to finished.

Of course that's just me. Maybe I like things with guages.

Helping a friend convert a kegerator!

Stopped by Jeremy's with some homebrewed barleywine in tow. We modified the fridge, connected the hoses and voila! :-)

Perlick faucets with Anchor Steam and Sly Fox tap handles. Yards Brawler and Jackie's Belgian Style Imperial Wheat on tap. Mmmm...

I made my millions. Now I'm gonna retire. I wonder if I can live on a dime a day?

I have no pictures of the 18 foot hops.

I really don't have pictures yet, but, I have to tell you I am amazed at these first year rhizhomes cut from my backyard cascades. Some of them are 18 feet tall. Wow!

How many flowers will Gavin's first year plants get? I guess I'll have to wait for those spurs. Maybe we'll have too many for us to deal with and we'll have to hold a hop picking party.

I wonder if there are any other hopyards with eighteen foot trellis systems in Pennsylvania.

Video: The Science of a Good Beer

Dave McLean of Magnolia Pub & Brewery details the science of brewing, from the perspective of a craft brewer. I have to meet Dave some day. I enjoyed this video immensely.

I also have a resource page dedicated to growing hops.

Summertime brewing, beating the heat...

I'll be very direct since I'm pressed for time. Here's my June 2009 Fermentation Friday write up. With regard to fermentation temps...
  • temp controller in old fridge
  • I have a basement so its easier to find a cool place, but, not always good enough
  • wet towel or t-shirt over glass carboy (haven't done this since I got the temp controller)
  • choose styles that like the heat (haven't done this much, saison)
And then there's the chilling of the wort. Well summertime increases the time it takes an immersion chiller to chill the wort. This is due to the temp of the tap water. I've decided to build a chiller with two separate coils. One side gets immersed in ice cold water, the other in the wort. I have the coils, now I have to put it to good use. Less water wasted and less time spent.

How do you beat the heat of summer time brewing? FF@BrewDudes

Come read the answers homebrew bloggers share with us at Brew Dudes tomorrow.

Yikes! Its the end of the month already. Also, any readers out there who want to help with next months topic?

Hopyard picture...

Thanks for the picture Gav.

If you look closely, you can see the bines are well over halfway up the twine (18' trellis ;-). Not bad for first year plants. Will be nice to see them fill out with arms/side shoots and then see how many flower spurs start poping out.

An idea for homebrew bloggers. Are you interested?

I'd like to create a sidebar widget for Fermentation Friday that others could use. Would you be interested? Here's what I'm thinking...
  • light weight and loads quickly
  • automatically updated each month by me (no wise cracks) *New!
  • basic info, Fermentation Friday, Date, Host site, link to site
  • something that would blend into any site (wonder what that would take?)

The goals would be...

  • encourage attendance by making people aware
  • promote a group blogging activity and build community

I'm open to suggestions. I may have started the homebrew version of the session, but it belongs to all of us.

Remember Brew Dudes is up this month on the 26th. I'll update my sidebar to reflect this.

Note: Matt, Jason, Rob and Travis I've noted your requests. Still looking for a reader who might want to volunteer a topic. I think it would be cool to have a reader take a crack at it. Anybody want to advertise on their blog.

Edit: Oops got the date wrong. Its the 26th not the 28th.

New mash tun and some other stuff...

Yeah, I asked for some help and here I am not waiting and writing anyway. (shrug) Might as well go with it.

Windows open in the house. Southeastern Pennsylvania feels cooler if a bit humid tonight. Dogs deciding where to lay before I banish them to the sunroom for the night. Earlier my son pointed out the fireflies. I said, "Hey, there's a ton. That's the first time I've seen them this year." He replied in a matter of fact tone, "I've seen them a lot." Huh, I thought I was pretty observant. BTW brewed a beer called Firefly Lights ale last year around this time.

Its been at least a week now since I expanded my brewing vessel collection. Waiting for a time when I could take a picture of the new addition is proving strangely elusive. Enough waiting, a friend of mine, Dell, thought of me when he decided to expand his own system. Selling his mash tun would help finance a new, even bigger one. The offer included a 16 gal. Sabco mash tun with the false bottom screen and everything. I was quick to jump on the offer at a fair price. I hung up the phone jumped in the car and traversed the winding country roads. After a bit of homebrew talk we wrapped up the visit with a look at his oak barrel filled with brew and a selection of one of his homebrews, the worm wood wild ale I believe. I left smiling and happy to have this well cared for brewing vessel. Dell, can rest assured it will be put to good use.

Soon after arriving home and phoning a neighbor I found myself sipping this wonderfully grapefruity explosion of a beer with two neighbors. This isn't the hop bomb kind of explosion. Its more like drinking the perfect grapefruit. So it was, a happy ending to a night when the cloud cover reflected the suns orange pink luminous glow onto sheets of green foliage. I wonder how I missed those fireflies my son spoke of.

Grab a chair. Tell me. What do you want to hear more about?

Anybody curious about something going on here at Beer Bits 2. Hopyard pictures are in the works. Should I post something about the late malt brew, my three tier in the works, the brew basement, brewing with the Brute can, drinking mainly my homebrew, starting a brewery, etc.

Truth is, I must be going through a dry spell, five days worth. Maybe you can help unblock this homebrew blogger.

Fermentation Friday: We need hosts! Don't have a blog? No problem!

Brew Dudes will host in June, but, the schedule is empty after that. I'm calling on all homebrew bloggers and readers (that's right you don't need a blog). Don't be shy. I think we've demonstrated that we're interested in listening to all things beer and homebrew. I welcome one and all to give it a shot. Here is how it works.
  • email me or leave a comment saying you want to host
  • I'll add you to the schedule and let you know what month
  • pick a homebrew topic
  • announce your topic on your blog or find a blogger who will host it for you (my blog is available)
  • be clear about the topic, so we know what to write about
  • after its all done and/or during Fermentation Friday write a recap
So lets get some readers writing. Why should all the homebrew bloggers have all the fun. Do you wish you belonged to the inner circle of homebrew bloggers? Does the status and intrigue keep you tossing and turning at night? Well this is your chance and no there isn't any weird initiation ritual...yet.
